In the script I was working from, Roy would encounter an antonomous robot in his dive into coolant fluid on Mars. The director wanted the design to evoke mythical creatures. I suppose this was to support the idea that he has to go into the underworld to rescue his father.

At this point, Production Designer Kevin Thompson wanted something formless and murky. Since I had a 3d scene set up, all I really needed to do is swap out geometries for different designs.

This design was setteld on, because of it’s almost human diffuse silhouette, though never made it into the final cut.
